The Lockheed P-38 Lightning was one of the most feared combat airplanes during World War II (WW2). Many squadrons had their own insignias. This was the design for the 49th Fighter Squadron.

In the South West Pacific theater, the P-38 was the primary long-range fighter of United States Army Air Forces until the appearance of large numbers of P-51D Mustangs toward the end of the war

The Lockheed P-38 Lightning showed up at the 16th Oldtimer meeting in 2011 at the Hahnweide, near Kirchheim / Teck, Germany. It'sactually a glider airfield with a grass runway. As always this air show event is quite fascinating. There are lots of historical airplanes taking part at the flight show. With some planes, like the legendary Junkers JU-52 or Antonov An-2 you can book roundtrips. The event takes place in 2-years Intervals.
